Writing is a safe activity, right? It is inexpensive to get started at least. One can spend very little money in 10,000 hours at the keyboard. It is a time one can take to master probably about as much as one is going to take to reach a point of mastery.
When I was in graduate school I had a friend who did some research on the decision to stay in school beyond reaching a degree because it was cheaper. If I remember correctly, she might have had a P/T instructor position so it was not a completely usual case. It was cost effective. She had little time to spend money, lived simply, student insurance was cheaper then, her activities were limited to mostly the academic work, et c. I feel now for me, I am definitely on hold for more course work. I am basically ABD w/ a 630 pp. manuscript that needs a major overhaul beyond the "original ideas" that are documented. I still am not foolish about passing by a lesson, learning in general. I hold that high priority in my life. I am more like the portfolio/formal coursework place in my life. I want the emphasis w/ what I have done w/ my life to this point. I take my stance w/ both portfolio projects and related courses, emphasis on portfolio.
I was talking w/ my father earlier, and we were talking about careers. He was an engineer that went to Purdue, taught tech classes then was fortunate to be in the very beginning days to set up a regional tech/associates campus of Kent State w/ some other engineers and various instructors. He never imagined he would have that as a career, moving to main, tenure, et c. He has been now retired as long as he taught, and a second career ininvesting. All those experiences make for good writing material/topics. We have plans for two manuscripts, the first on land surveying, the second, investing. I have played the Oedipus compete w/ the father role for a while. Today we figured at early middle age (I am actually fairly immature for my age, although in MENSA Intl cognitively.) I have had four full careers; twenty years as a composer, twenty-five years as a writer, twenty-five as a fine artist, and a hodge/podge six years mostly P/T teaching college and eleven rs. teaching and mentoring people in the mental health field. And also I land surveyed running instrument P/T in the summers/spring break/even some winter breaks for twenty years. So four careers plus a bit is really a better estimate. All of those experiences give material for writing. Summary; Write what is worth doing, and/or do what is worth writing about.
So go at it. The rest of your life starts now!!! There is some good, honest supportive "Sagan-stuff" for you. Keep learning. Yes. And keep the faith.
Now I have the task to send my formatter about two hours away a ms. form him to get a start on it betw/ his grad classes. Oi, the tech savvy universe. Thanks, T.E.
