What is the idea? Good in; good out. Otherwise transpose, translate, rectify. You want a good product, a yield whether it is Woody Guthrie style (Never want to sing a song to make someone not feel well and good mindset.) and S. King effects of his writing resultants. Somewhere betw/? Some common advice, suggestions, ideas to position for decision making w/ writing, and experienced emperical data from other writers is to read your genre, be familiar, do the dance "you've been shown until the dance becomes your very own." Jackson Browne quote. Well-bled paint is another synergetic expression. You have the tubes to work w/ finding your own expression in color and distribution. What is involved and to what degree; Acceptance, acknowledgments of experiences, a diary of a life, credit for your work, credit for your experience, your lessons in experiences. Remember write what is worth doing. Do what is worth writing. Then break the rules.
I have gone from reading cover to cover approximately one hundred books in a year to only reading for reference for at least a year. Most people know (perhaps a surprise otherwise) that on ebooks mostly purchases are fiction. Before I got into Mensa, that is before I took the candidacy exam, I read only nonfiction for one year. See the idea. I felt real rather than fictional works would get my mind set on factual knowledge, free from confusing and sorting out nonfiction from fiction. The subconscious works in mysterious maybe mystical ways. Idea/motivational force? GI-GO. (W/ a healthy attitude of aceptance. I just did not want to confuse Flash Gordon sci-fi details w/ real astro-projections, say.) The uncluttered mind is not unlike an uncluttered hard-drive. It works better.
Before I took my 250 sketches from what I collected during 1995 -2007 and installed Sibelius? I listened to very little other people's music. I listened to some music, very selectively. What? Yes. And in 2007-2008 into Sibelius they went, dropping note by note ... aaargh the tedium, but the output!!!! to be developed and expanded from a few minutes to twenty-thirty minute pieces, 32 measures (16ths and more) spanning 500 measures plus. They became "typeset scores" totally respectively, by the count of 250 as well, the resultant number, and ... whew. This was my life work in music at the time. I did not want to sound like a one-man cover band, so to speak. I had listened to a small smattering of jazz that previous year, some, few classical works so that my input for the sabbatical/previous year was basically input of the silence nature for the "rest," ... John Cage mode. I had been playing music most of my adult life, the effect of twenty-five years. Tons of material in the subconscious, memory recall status to surface appropriately! It is funny,m quirky. Stop listening to music in a day and see how you hear anyway. My dream manifested. 12 volumes of twenty tunes ea.
Age is another idea/block? If not now when?!!!?? I now play violin-jazz, klezmer, and new/classical. Yes. As well as new and especially my own new music. I cannot help but beam in pride w/ well-groundedness. The piano? And jazz and new. Classical guitar?? .... flamenco the favorite. I do celebrate folk, jazz, returning w/ a fever for flamenco w/ the rhythm of heart of languages. Anyway I got very original works out of the 250. I got a close melody, bass run to an 80s pop song for a few close measures varying fro mthe original enough, still slightly close to say no influence a subjective call. Another out of the 250 was a much needed reworkingh of my own version of When th saints Go Marching In. Last but not least the beastly problem of a few measures that closely resembled a R. Wakeman keyboard run manifested. A job for lawyers to debate. The evidence is what it is. The intent was free from maliciousness! So see my idea, the idea.
I had listened a lot to Yes/Wakeman twenty years before. I also had some organ pieces to the genre much closely although w/ no "cut/paste" intentions of someone else's work. It only hurts me, and discredits my life's work. Foul play is no fun. Honesty, open-mindedness and willingness to play the game ethically is the manifesting of one's true life's work. Again the subconscious mind is amazing. Use it wisely. J. Murphy, a priest w/ much accredited knowledge has probably one of the most understandable effective books on how to tap into this subconscious "world." Affirmations, self-hypnosis, mindfulness meditation, yoga, prayer, relaxation techniques and walks flourish as a way to increase and utilize your capabilities, talents, skills, gifts, energy, holistically, wholly, well, to a gain. Everyone wins. It is a win/win situation. When I am fervently playing violin, totally absorbed yet no conscious thout, hand playing w/out directions of the surface mind, all GI-GO is from a deeper mind. The enrgy takes full control and effortlessness settles in. Let THAT be your writing mind. Eat good food. Feel better. Operate better. Otherwise work out at the gym like hell!
